Both Gina and Nedra have long subscribed to a parenting philosophy called Attachment Parenting. Coined by William and Martha Sears in The Baby Book, this parenting style emphasizes attachment and connection. Though it evolves over time, it starts from the very moments of birth. There are seven tenets of Attachment Parenting–also referred to as the “7 Bs”:
- Birth Bonding
- Belief in Your Baby’s Cues
- Balance and Boundaries
- Beware of Baby Trainers
We discuss what these tenets have meant to us over our years as parents and midwives, as well as concerns that we have about current parenting trends that we are seeing–trends that seem to be undermining parents’ confidence in themselves.
We also mention the work of James McKenna regarding safe bedsharing.
